Controlled toughness after hardening
Freshly hardened steel can be too hard and brittle for service. Tempering reheats the component below the A1 temperature for a defined period.
As tempering temperature rises, hardness generally decreases while toughness increases. The selected temperature and time depend on the required mechanical properties.
