Quench-and-temper steels

These steels are used for shafts, gears, crankshafts, fasteners and other highly loaded machine components. Their composition supports hardening and subsequent toughness adjustment.

The process

Parts are heated to the austenitizing range, held until the structure is homogeneous, rapidly quenched in a suitable medium and then tempered. The cycle balances hardness, tensile strength and toughness.
