Technical explanation
Purpose of normalizing
The material is heated above its transformation range, held until austenitization is complete and then cooled in still air. This refines the microstructure, balances structural irregularities and restores ductility after forming operations.
Typical materials
- Carbon, tool and stainless steels
- Cast iron and selected nickel-based alloys
- Selected copper, brass and aluminium alloys where technically appropriate
