Technical explanation
Carburizing steel
Low-carbon alloyed or unalloyed steels are used when a hard, wear-resistant surface and a tougher core are required. Carbon is diffused into the surface at the austenitizing temperature.
The process
Carburizing is generally performed at 900–950 °C. Case depth is controlled by temperature and time; the component is then quenched in a suitable medium and tempered. The final cycle is selected according to material, geometry and target properties.
